Hot air balloons drifting over the valley at sunrise

Teotihuacán Hot Air Balloon Guide: When to Go and What to Bring

Everything you need to plan your sunrise flight over the pyramids.

Book your flight

Best season and time to fly

Balloons fly over Teotihuacán throughout the year, always at sunrise, when the air is calmest.

  • Dry season (roughly November to April): clear mornings and great views of the pyramids and the mountains around the valley. Mornings are cold before sunrise.
  • Rainy season (roughly June to September): rain usually falls later in the day and many mornings are still flyable, but weather cancellations are more likely.

Whatever the month, the flight itself is the same: 30 to 90 minutes in the air as the sun comes up.

What to wear

  • Layers. It can be cold before sunrise, and it warms up quickly once the sun is out.
  • Closed, comfortable shoes. The balloon may land in a field.
  • A cap or hat. The burner gives off heat overhead.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for the rest of the morning, especially if you visit the pyramids afterwards.

What to bring

  • Your phone or camera, with a wrist or neck strap.
  • A small bag only: there is limited space in the basket.
  • Water and sunscreen for after the flight.
  • Your booking confirmation.

How early you wake up: a typical flight morning

  1. 1

    Before dawn

Leave Mexico City, or get picked up if you booked transport. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the drive.

  2. 2

    At the balloon port

Free coffee, the safety briefing and the weather update while the balloons are inflated.

  3. 3

    Sunrise

Take off and fly for 30 to 90 minutes over the pyramids and the valley.

  4. 4

    After landing

A traditional toast and your flight certificate. The rest of the morning is yours.

The weather and cancellation reality

Balloons only fly in safe conditions. The local authority provides the general safety assessment and the pilot makes the final decision on site, sometimes on the morning of the flight itself.

If your flight is cancelled for unsafe weather, you can reschedule or receive a refund under our cancellation rules; promotional bookings can be rescheduled. If your dates are flexible, plan the flight early in your trip so there is time to reschedule. Read more on our safety page.

Combine the flight with the pyramids

The flight is over in the morning, so you can visit the Teotihuacán archaeological site the same day: the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Avenue of the Dead you saw from the air.

When you book, add the archaeological site entrance, or a guided tour with the entrance included. Bring sun protection and water: there is little shade at the site.

Where to eat afterwards

Add a Mexican breakfast to your booking for an easy start after landing. San Martín de las Pirámides and San Juan Teotihuacán also have local restaurants if you prefer to explore on your own.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear for a balloon flight?

Dress in layers: mornings before sunrise can be cold, and it warms up quickly once the sun is out. Wear closed, comfortable shoes, because the balloon may land in a field. A cap or hat is a good idea because the burner gives off heat overhead.

Can I bring my phone or camera?

Yes, and you will want to. Use a wrist strap or a neck strap so nothing can fall from the basket, and keep bags small: there is limited space on board.

At what time are the flights and from where do they depart?

All flights depart from the Volé en Globo balloon port early in the morning, with an exact time based on the sunrise. If the first flight fills up, a second flight will be opened, departing 1 to 1.5 hours later.

Can I do the balloon flight and visit the pyramids on the same day?

Yes. The flight takes off around sunrise, so you are back on the ground in the morning with the rest of the day free. When you book, you can add an entrance ticket to the Teotihuacán archaeological site, or a guided tour with the entrance included.

What is the minimum and maximum age to fly?

The minimum age to fly is generally 4 years old. This can vary depending on the child's height, as they must be tall enough to see over the edge of the basket. There is no maximum age, but all passengers must be able to stand unassisted for the entire flight.
